I haven’t been up there yet since the fire passed through the Malibu canyons but normally I commute through this spot every day. Often enough that I have a photo from the same exact spot just a month or so ago!
Once it’s safe to do so, I definitely want to take a drive with my dash cam rolling to really compare the difference. There’s some other photos I saw on Facebook that really seem frightening and make it seem like it’s gonna be a while before I can drive any of those roads though. Hoping some of the houses down in that area made it out okay but it’s not looking to good based on this...
Fire is still burning too so we shall see what happens with the weather and heroic f irefighting efforts.
Here’s some video I have from right in the middle of that fire area, before it burned. Lots of trees and houses that I probably won’t see again:
Found on YouTube from during the fire:

I want to offer some clever, amusing, uplifting quip, but I have none. Seems like good feels are few and far between these days.

That’s an awfully large fire just to kill a snake.

That’s really sad. Glad you’re safe. I can’t get over how many detrimental fires there have been out there this last decade.

Clearly you are a menace to society with that 140+ mph drive through the canyon.
Props though for making it stick through all those corners though . Must have had on the super softs.
I expect there will be a lot of hit and miss on th e fire damage . Some areas get devastated and some areas get missed, either by a few good drops of retardant by the a irplanes or just luck of the wind. I grew up in LA and the San Fernando valley and I saw a lot of fires and although they get shown in the media as all encompassing some areas do manage to es cape.
Either way t here will certainly be a lot of peoples beautiful hom es and emotional treasure burned up.

Yeah gotta run Hoosiers every day lol.
And yeah I'd imagine you are right but I'll find out soon enough once everything is out and the roads are open. Should be quite the apocalyptic dash cam footage.

I think my shot at a ‘fun’ drive back up to SF is completely gone. Looks like I’d have to go all the way up to Buttonwillow before I can cut to the coast and end up in SLO. That’s probably going to add way too much travel time :(

What was your planned route? There are a ton of alternate routes I could suggest through the area. If your drive is like this week, yeah anything off of the PCH is a no go. But some things worth checking out between here and SLO are definitely CA 150 to 33 to 58. The 101 past Ventura is actually interesting too, even if it is a bit straight. If leaving that way ASAP from somewhere South of LA, I'd say 405 to 118 to 23 North from Moorpark to Fillmore and then West on 126 to then pick up 150. It'd be more fun on some Malibu canyons but it's Ill advised to attempt that. If things simmer down and you have a few days to wait, there are some amazing canyons that haven't burned yet though!

I’m leaving Wednesday from Santa Monica. I also don’t wanna add on too much time on top of the minimum 5:30 it takes. Now I’m thinking I might do 405 -> 126 -> 150 -> 33 -> 166 -> 119 and pick up the 5 again in Buttonwillow. 33 north of Ojai has been raved about so I get to do that and it should only add like 2 hours.

I completely agree with 405, 126, 150, 33. That is a definite must. I don’t think it would add on a whole lot of time though to take 58 from the top of 33 and then just follow the 101 into SF. That would basically give you the best possible drive I could suggest, regardless of the fires. Sure if you had time, I’d say skip the 101 and just go straight to the PCH for the final icing on that cake. But that would definitely add too much time if you’re concerned about that. Avoid the 5, unless you really like not enough lanes, cows, trucks, and cops. It’s painful to go anything under 90 the whole way on that road and the amount of bugs you pick up is insane.
